This property makes the third conservation easement the Conservancy holds in Shrewsbury Township. The township is part of the Northern Highlands, a region considered to be one of the eight special places in Lycoming County according to the County Comprehensive Plan of 1996.
The VanHorn Homestead contains a swamp, with the unique feature that it drains both east and west; east to Lake Run and west into Big Run, which is a high-quality, native trout stream. The property is visible from the Genessee Trail and from a township road. The conservation easement provides the public traveling these two thoroughfares with a view of the open space.
