NPC along with our partners at the Montour County Conservation District, Northumberland County Conservation District, Union County Conservation District, Tioga County Conservation District, and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission were recognized for our work from August 2012 through July 2013 to stabilize stream banks, reduce erosion and sedimentation, and increase riparian buffers. We received a 2014 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence tonight (April 22, 2014)!
During the 12 month period we worked with 18 landowners on 13 streams and addressed over 20,000 feet of agriculturally impaired stream. We installed over 6,400 feet of stream bank fencing, 5 animal walkways, 21 animal/equipment crossings, over 1 acre of riparian buffer plantings and 151 in-stream structures.
Funding for these projects came from a Growing Greener grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The grant funds are matched with volunteer time as well as donations from local watershed associations and the landowners.
Governor Tom Corbett said in a press release, “Their efforts are key to ensure that Pennsylvania’s air, land and water are clean for generations to come.”
DEP Secretary Chris Abruzzo presented the awards at a dinner hosted by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. Secretary Abruzzo commented, “This year’s award recipients are protecting Pennsylvania’s environment with creativity and ingenuity.”
