Join us on Little Shamokin Creek July 10, 11, and 12, 2013 as we work with several private landowners to stabilize the stream bank and increase aquatic habitat. This will be an active construction and you’ll see sections of the stream that still have eroding stream banks, sections of the stream where multi-log deflectors and mudsills have been installed, as well as have the opportunity to see the active construction taking place.
The field days are “open” meaning you can come when you want, stay as long as you want, and leave when you need to. When you arrive we’ll have you join whatever tour is underway and loop through all three areas (pre-construction, active construction, and post-construction).

Directions from Sunbury: Travel Rt. 61 South outside of town, turn slight right onto Rt. 890 South. Travel approximately 6 miles, turn slight left onto Irish Valley Road. Travel approximately 1.5 miles…..turn right into Irish Valley Campground driveway (776 Irish Valley Road).
Directions from Trevorton: From Rt. 225, turn onto Rt. 890 North. Travel approximately 3 miles, turn hard right onto Irish Valley Road. Travel approximately 1.5 miles……..turn right into Irish Valley Campground driveway (776 Irish Valley Road).
As you can see from the photos on this page, the sites have steep, eroding stream banks. Using some heavy equipment, and a lot of hand labor, mudsills and cross vanes, as well as other structures, will be installed along the length of the stream section.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has developed a handbook on “Habitat Improvement for Trout Streams” that includes information on the characteristics of a candidate site, the types of structures used, and how those structures are constructed.
